COLUMBUS — The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Transportation are reminding drivers to be safe on the roads during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Troopers will be out on patrol keeping an eye on the roads with an extra emphasis on seat belt violations, impaired or distracted drivers, and speeding, OSHP said.

17 people died on Ohio roads last year.

“Memorial Day begins what is, unfortunately, the 100 deadliest days on the road. Working together, we can change that. Focus on the road, buckle up, drive sober, and obey the speed limit,” said State Patrol Superintendent Colonel Charles Jones.

You can report drug activity and dangerous or impaired driving by calling #677.

The Ohio Department of Transportation also said they are working with contractors to suspend or reduce the size of work zones to accommodate the extra traffic.

Travel delays are expected due to road work, especially on I-75 in Dayton and Cincinnati and I-70 through Columbus, according to ODOT.

“Roads will be packed with travelers. Planning ahead and being patient will be key,” said ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks. “Above all, we want everyone to be safe and arrive at their destination.”

AAA is predicting at least 42 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this weekend, a 7% increase from last year.
