Troopers from the Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol were dispatched at 5 a.m. on initial reports of a crash on Oldaker Road in Union Township, according to an OSHP spokesperson.
A preliminary investigation revealed a 2008 Mazda 3 was traveling northwest when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The car went off the left side of the road and struck trees before catching fire.
William Hornschemeier, 42 of Lynchburg, was the only occupant in the Mazda and pronounced dead at the scene.
He was also not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol use is suspected, OSHP said.
No other vehicles were involved.
He is also the fifth person to die in a crash in Highland County this year, according to OSHP.
The crash remains under investigation.
