Ohio Task Force 1 (OH-TF1) is hosting a training class for Heavy Equipment Rigging specialists and instructors in Ohio to train first responders in the use of rigging techniques, according to the public information officer (PIO) with OH-TF1.

The class started on Monday, Oct. 31st., and will be wrapping up on Thursday, Nov. 3rd., the PIO said. This 32 hour HERS course is being held at the OH-TF1 Training Center in Dayton.
“The primary purpose of the HERS course is to provide functional training to US&R Task Force members in the utilization of, and communication with, contractors, trade union members and heavy equipment operators,” the PIO said in the media release.
The class goes in depth on the basic and advanced concepts of the use of heavy equipment and other types of rigging during urban search and rescue incidents (US&R), the PIO said.
Students taking this class will learn many skills such as:
- Common rigging terminology
- Heavy equipment hand signals
- How to safely and efficiently deploy mobile cranes and other heavy equipment during critical US&R operations
- How demolition contractors and their equipment may be effectively used
- Identify the non-traditional uses of mobile cranes and other heavy equipment that may be employed during US&R operations.

Students will work with structural engineers, rescue specialists, riggers and equipment operators to learn the more advanced skills, the PIO said.
The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 18 Regional Coordinator, James Singleton, has worked closely with OH-TF1 to deliver this course to students for the sixth time, the PIO said.
The course coordinator and one of the lead instructors, Michael Muhl, is a Rescue Team Manager with OH-TF1 and a Battalion Chief with the Huber Heights Fire Division, the PIO said.

Steve Shupert is the lead instructor for this course, the PIO said. Shupert is a Rescue Team Manager with OH-TF1.
The Task Force now has nearly 30 personnel trained as Heavy Equipment Rigging Specialists, 13 of them recognized Federal Instructors for the HERS curriculum, the PIO said in the media release.
