Five children, ranging in ages from 1 to 8 years old, were removed Thursday evening from a “deplorable” home in the 200 block of Alton Avenue, according to a Dayton Police report.
Police went to the home after a tip at a neighborhood watch meeting and the Mayor’s Porch Tour.
Inside the home, the officer said there was moldy clothing in a laundry room washing machine that had not been removed, and that “a foot of clothing” covered the laundry room floor. Trash was at the foot of the basement stairs, and the refrigerator was bare. The cabinets had little to no dry goods, but were filled with “filth and trash.”
Upstairs, the officer stated that the bathroom was filthy, the tub half-full of brown water, the toilet was filled with urine and the smell filled the whole upstairs living area.
The home had bedbugs, and there was only one bed downstairs to sleep on. No one, the report said, slept on the beds upstairs because of the infestation.
Nick Wallace, 38, said he is the children’s father and was given a summons on suspicion of child endangering.
The officer called Montgomery County Children Services, which took the children from the home. The children are now in the care of an aunt, the report stated.
