Political Experts: No Proof of Voter Fraud, Litigation Could Last Weeks

While President Donald Trump and many of his supporters have claimed Democrats are trying to steal the election, a pair of political experts in the Miami Valley say they are not seeing any evidence of widespread problems.

Prof. Mark Caleb Smith of Cedarville University said the President can voice complaints but so far there is no evidence to back it up. “I have not seen anything that tells me the election has been stolen or that there is this great cloud that is taking over the election somehow,” Smith said.

It comes just as the Ohio Republican Party has dispatched staff to other states to help with legal challenges. “My staff is in Pennsylvania and Michigan. We are looking at how these votes are being counted. I think the country needs to have confidence in the outcome of the elections,” said Jane Murphy Timken, Chair of the Ohio Republican Party. The head of the Biden campaign in Ohio expects the vote count will be fair and accurate. “In the next two days we will have a victory. I’m feeling very confident on behalf of our campaign,” said Toni Webb, Biden Campaign Manager.

The slow pace of the vote count in other states may have some people thinking there is something wrong with the process. Political Science Prof. Christopher Devine of the University of Dayton said, though, the system is working just as it was designed in those states. “Why it seems so painfully slow in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona and Michigan is there are very close states where every vote is going to matter. It takes some time to count all of them,” Devine said.

The race may be called by the Associated Press or a TV network this weekend. Officially it does not end until each state submits its final count of all of the votes and that will take a few more weeks. Litigation could mean even more drama. How long could it last?   “Honestly, more time than most of us prefer. It could go on for another 4 or 5 weeks if the Trump campaign chooses to drag it out,” Smith said.
