Middle school students collect over 500 pounds of food donations in one week

More than 500 pounds of non-perishable food items were collected by a middle school in Springfield, according to the Communications Specialist and Director of Communications with Springfield City Schools District.

In just one week, Schaefer Middle School students and staff collected more than 500 pounds of non-perishable items to be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank, the spokesperson said in a media release shared with News Center 7.

Schaefer students and Hayward Middle School students competed against each other to see how many donations could be collected for the food bank, according to the release.

Second Harvest picked up the donations on Friday ahead of Springfield City School District’s Wellness Week beginning on Monday, the spokesperson said.
