Malfunction causes fire at Dayton Forging and Heat Treating building

A malfunction involving a manufacturing furnace caused a fire Wednesday morning at an East Dayton business.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight at Dayton Forging and Heat Treating, 215 N. Findlay St.

“They were doing what is called a ‘quench,’ which is basically just dropping metal into a heated furnace,” said Dayton District Chief Scott Rowlett. “They had some type of malfunction, still undetermined at this time. “

The furnace caught fire and the fire spread to the building’s roof, Rowlett said.

Initially, fire units thought the fire was caused by a gas leak, but they were able to shut off the gas and determine that was not the cause.

No one was injured, said Rowlett, and all the employees were able to get out of the building safely.
