17-year-old pleads not guilty in February slaying of pregnant woman, her fetus

DAYTON — UPDATED @ 9:19 a.m. (Sept. 6):

A 17-year-old accused of fatally shooting a 22-year-old pregnant woman pleaded not guilty to charges Thursday morning in the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.

Bond was set at $1 million for Brandon Leigh, who will be tried as an adult in the death of Keyona Deshawn Murray.

The shooting also resulted in the death of Murray’s fetus.

INITIAL REPORT:

A 17-year-old will be tried as an adult in the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old pregnant woman in a home on Lorenz Avenue in February.

Brandon Leigh, who remains in the Montgomery County Juvenile Justice Center for now, is charged on single counts:

* Murder

* Involuntary manslaughter

* Improper discharge of a firearm at or into a habitation

* Having weapons as a felon

Keyona Deshawn Murray’s fetus also died in the shooting, which investigators determined occurred when someone fired toward the home from an alley behind the address.

Leigh will be tried as an adult because on Aug. 8 when Judge Anthony Capizzi determined there was probable cause based on the serious nature of the charges and Leigh’s lengthy juvenile criminal record.

Arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 4, according to the county prosecutor's office.
