Area deputy received suspension after flock camera records

Flock Camera (Troy PD)

COLUMBUS — Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy is on unpaid leave for misuse of Flock cameras.

Deputy Robert Tischler accessed the Flock cameras in a manner that was “inconsistent with the deputy’s authorized duties and responsibilities,” according to our news partner WBNS.

Tischler is on unpaid leave for 30 days.

After the suspension, Tischler will be reassigned from his patrol duties to the Corrections Division, and his access to Flock cameras will be removed.

“We have a responsibility to ensure that the technology entrusted to this Office is used appropriately, responsibly, and solely for legitimate law enforcement purposes. That is why we initiated this review proactively,” said Dallas Baldwin, Franklin County Sheriff.

“Maintaining the public’s trust and keeping our community safe is my top priority. Law enforcement technology, such as the Flock camera system, is an important investigative tool and must be used only for investigative purposes,” Baldwin said.

Baldwin said that he has directed each division to oversee access to automated license plate reader systems, as well as who used them and when.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said it does not have a contract with Flock for stationary cameras and has never had them.

The use of Flock cameras has been paused or ended by some following this misuse by the deputy.

Attorney General Andy Wilson told WBNS last month that he supports legislation that would make the misuse of license plate reader systems a felony, while also defending the cameras as an important law enforcement tool.
