A West Carrollton man being charged and detained in North Korea is one of two U.S. captives who say in an Associated Press video that they expect to be tried soon and could get long prison terms.
Jeffrey Fowle is seen in the video with Matthew Miller in their first appearance since being detained more than three months ago, according to the AP. They offer apologies for crimes they committed and appeal for help from the U.S. government, but it was unclear whether they were speaking on their own initiative or whether the statements were coerced, according to the AP.
They made the comments in a video shot Friday by a local AP Television News crew. The AP said the crew was taken to a location to meet the detained Americans after repeated requests to North Korean authorities to see them.
Fowle, a 56-year-old Moraine city employee, has been detained along with Miller and Kenneth Bae.
U.S. Rep. Michael Turner, R-Dayton, said his office was in contact with the State Department this morning, and "we will remain in constant communication as we continue to monitor the situation."
"I remain very concerned about Mr. Fowle's detainment by the DPRK," according to a statement released by Turner's office.
