Vacant City Centre Building becomes safety threat

DAYTON — Pedestrians in downtown Dayton had a close call on Tuesday, when a large pane of glass fell from the Centre City Building onto the sidewalk.

Police and fire department crews were dispatched to make sure there were no injuries.

The building was first blocked off in January of this year when glass and other debris came crashing down due to a strong windstorm.

Since then, barriers have been placed around the building, but now law enforcement is ordering those barriers to be moved back even further, blocking the entire sidewalk and forcing pedestrians into the road.

"There is development interest in the building but at this point in time, there is nothing solidified or firm moving forward,' says Dayton City Manager Shelley Dickstein. “We’re really looking forward to when the Arcade is done, there’s a lot of redevelopment opportunity around that”

Located at Fourth and Main Street, the Centre City Building became Dayton’s first skyscraper when it was built in 1904. Today the large office tower is not only vacant, but has become hazardous to people downtown.

The building has been vacant since the mid-2000′s and has stayed that way through a couple ownership groups.
