Trustees to decide fate of township police department Tuesday

PERRY TOWNSHIP — Perry Township Trustees will be holding their monthly meeting Tuesday; among the agenda items of discussion is the possibility of dissolving their police department.

The Perry Township Police Department sent a press release to News Center 7 Monday about this possibility and what that means for its citizens.

“It has been brought to attention that one of the major topics that will be discussed is the Township trustees wanting to dissolve the Perry Township Police Department and contract with New Lebanon Police Department for police services,” a Perry Township Police spokesman said.

News Center 7‘s Taylor Robertson spoke with Melissa Mears, Perry Township Board of Trustees President Monday, about what would happen to those offices if the department was dissolved.

“I have no idea,” said Mears.

The Village of New Lebanon first proposed the idea to trustees about their police officers taking over Perry Township’s jurisdiction, New Lebanon Municipal Manager Glena Gebhart Madden told News Center 7. However, New Lebanon said never said they initiated the proposal.

“We’ve not even had a discussion about the proposal,” said Mears.

The board of trustees will meet Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at the township office on Johnsville Brookville Road.
