Around 7:40 p.m., Springfield police were called to the Quality Inn in the 300 block of East Leffel Lane to assist the United States Marshal Service with taking a suspect into custody.
The suspect was wanted for murder out of Columbus, according to Springfield Police Chief Allison Elliott.
As law enforcement approached the hotel room the suspect was believed to be in, shots were fired from inside.
At this time, it does not appear that any law enforcement returned fire, Elliot said.
SWAT officers were then called to the scene, and the suspect barricaded himself in the room.
People inside the hotel were taken out by officers while they worked to get the suspect out.
Hostage negotiators were also contacted.
Law enforcement was eventually able to take the suspect into custody safely. No one else was inside the hotel room.
Elliott did not identify the suspect.
Agencies, including the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Springfield Fire Division, responded to the scene.
We will continue to follow this story.
