U.S. 35 sign flub: How did it happen?

The sign directing drivers from Interstate 675 south to U.S. 35 East was misprinted and the Ohio Department of Transportation said the contractor for the project is to blame.

“What we think happened was the contractor had the wrong sign made,” said Brian Cunningham, communications manager for ODOT’s 8th District.

A temporary green stripe was installed over the word “Dayton” on the sign located on the exit ramp from southbound I-675 to U.S. 35 east so drivers would not be confused. The sign should read “Xenia” instead, Cunningham said.

Cunningham said signs, like the misprinted one, typically cost between $1,500-$2,000.

According to Cunningham, the sign will either need replaced or have an overlay with the correct city printed, but a decision on the fix had not yet been made.

The contractor will be responsible for the cost to fix the error, Cunningham said.
