Shelby County breaks Guinness World Record as part of yearlong bicentennial celebration

SIDNEY — Shelby County residents are officially record-breakers.

Students and residents from across the county simultaneously opened 2,344 pull-tab cans Wednesday morning at Sidney Memorial Stadium to claim a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

They shattered the previous record of 1,204 set in 2018 in Japan.

The event was a part of Shelby County’s yearlong bicentennial celebration, and paid tribute to Stolle Machinery in Sidney, which originated and perfected the process for mass-producing pop-top cans.

It's Official. A new GUINNESS WORLD RECORD. Congratulations to all involved.
