DAYTON — A 25-year-old man was taken into custody after a SWAT standoff in a Dayton neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

Around 3:51 a.m., Dayton police were dispatched to the 250 block of Sandhurst Drive, according to a Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Sergeant.

Dayton Police Sergeant Jordan Alexander told News Center 7 that crews were initially dispatched on reports of a man inside the house who was believed to be suicidal.
A 911 caller told dispatchers she was on the phone with her ex-boyfriend, who was saying he was going to commit suicide. She said she heard a gunshot, and the male went silent, according to Dayton police.
Responding crews discovered that there were other occupants inside the house, and police were able to get them out safely, according to Sgt. Alexander.
Sgt Alexander said that responding crews observed the 25-year-old man with a shotgun, who was threatening to harm himself.
Crews then performed a criminal history check and determined that he is currently on probation for a felony domestic violence conviction.
SWAT was eventually called to respond once it was determined that the man had prior convictions.
“We’re here to help people, but the reason it became a SWAT callout is because of the nature of the crimes that he was facing,” Sgt. Alexander said. “If not for that, it probably wouldn’t have been a SWAT callout.”
After about four to five hours, the Hostage Negotiation Team was able to convince the man to come out of the house, and he was taken into custody, according to Sgt. Alexander.
He was taken to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to Dayton Police.
Sgt. Alexander said that the man will likely be charged with weapons under disability, but said that other charges could be pending. He also stated that there was a search warrant issued.
Multiple crews responded, including Dayton Police Patrol Officers, SWAT crews, Hostage Negotiation crews, and unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) operators.
No injuries were reported as a result of the standoff.
The incident remains under investigation.
