I-70 reopens after mortar round found in area

UPDATE @ 5:25 p.m.

A Five Rivers Metroparks ranger spotted a suspicious device this afternoon next to a fence that separates Aullwood Road from Interstate 70 near Meeker Road, said Butler Twp. police Lt. Chris Guthrie in a news release.

The Dayton Bomb Squad responded, and determined the device was an inert military practice bomb that posed no danger.

As a precaution, both directions of Interstate 70, just east of Englewood, were shut down while the bomb squad investigated.

Butler Twp. Police Chief John Cresie said a mortar round found this afternoon was inert and not a threat.

The Dayton Bomb Squad responded to inspect the device after it was found on Meeker Road near Interstate 70. As a precaution, the highway and the Meeker Road underpass were shut down temporarily.

The bomb squad said it was an inert practice device, the chief said.

UPDATE @ 4:10 p.m.

Interstate 70 was temporarily shut down in both directions after a mortar round was found in the area.

A bomb squad recovered an incendiary device found this afternoon on Meeker Road, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Dayton Post. The highway was shut down at 3:50 p.m. as a precaution, the patrol said, but around 4 p.m. was reopened.

The mortar round was taken from the area and is under investigation by Butler Twp. police.

We are working to learn more details about the explosive device.

FIRST REPORT

Interstate 70 is closed in both directions between Airport Access Road and Ohio 48.

At 4 p.m. today traffic was at a standstill on the highway.

We are sending a crew to the scene and will update with more information.
