Recreational activities to return in Kettering in time for warm weather

KETTERING — For the last year, many recreational activities haven’t been able to happen in south Montgomery County because of the coronavirus.

With weather getting nicer and the pandemic trending in the right direction, News Center 7′s James Rider took a look at what spring could look like in Kettering.

One of the most popular things not available a year ago is the pool in Kettering, but it is now set to reopen this summer.

Christopher George, the facility manager at the Kettering Recreation Complex, said opening back is a huge decision.

“When we made the decision to cancel the season last year we got a lot of feedback. People just sad to miss out on the fun. We try to offer a lot of fun stuff in the summer and the water park is one of the biggest things that we do,” said George.

With so many programs coming back, it is also an opportunity for people to earn more money.

“We’re bringing back all the seasonal and temporary part time staff that we didn’t have the ability to bring back last year. Whether that be maintaining our parks, camp counselors, aquatic staff,” said Kettering Parks Superintendent, Gary Schussler.

There are still some offerings back now, such as the Rosewood Arts Center, just with limited capacity. The program many people are excited for is the return of ceramic classes.

“We see often the demand exceeds what we’re able to safely deliver for people. Which is great and a reason for us to find interesting solutions to accomodate more folks,” said Andrew Dailey, Cultural Arts Program Supervisor.

Summer camps, although with a lower capacity and a different look, will also be a place for arts and recreation.

“We’re excited to have camps again and we’re glad that they’re back on in Kettering this summer. We have a lot of different options for kids from traditional camps to sports camps. Camps that really focus on growing, learning, playing, having fun and being active,” said Drew Corbett, Kettering Recreation Manager.
