ODNR: Large portion of Indian Lake to be open for boaters Labor Day

LOGAN COUNTY — Heading into Labor Day weekend the Ohio Department of National Resources said more than 75 percent of Indian Lake will be open for boaters to use.

This comes after workers spent all summer trying to remove these weeds.

ODNR used machine called “Lake Rakers” to cut the weeds that are invading the lake, scoop them onto a conveyer belt and haul the piles to shore.

ODNR said this summer it has harvested more than 61,000 yards of weeds.

At a public meeting, locals and business owners shared how the weed problem has impacted their lives.

After 20 years away from the lake Jim Hagedorn decided to move back last summer.

“When I came back I was very excited to get out on the water and enjoy the lake again and you know, start my new business adventure,” Hagedorn said.

Hagedown bought “La Pizzaria”, he said his numbers were much better last year and he thinks the weeds are to blame.

Bud Christman has lived in the Indian Lake area for more than 50 years. He and others wanted more done so in Mid-May he started the “Indian Lake Advocacy Group.”

At the groups Tuesday night meeting, there was good news to share after the latest ODNR update.

“I think they like the transparency and they’re eager to find what it possible, and to see that what is possible can happen sooner than later,” Christman said.

Although workers have already sprayed roughly 400 acres, the Indian Lake Advocacy group wants ODNR to spray more.

News Center 7 has reached out to ODNR to see how much money has been spent cleaning the lake, but has not received a response.
