Major road projects get more than $32 million; several cities to benefit

MIAMI VALLEY — Some major roads in the Miami Valley will be receiving millions of dollars in federal transportation funding to reconstruct, repave and improve highly travelled areas of the Miami Valley.

The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission announced it has approved $32.4 million in funding for 51 different projects in several counties. The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission’s contributions to the projects will come from the regionally-controlled Surface Transportation Program, Transportation Alternatives funds and Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, according to the agency.

The projects will be matched with local funding, which will bring the financial commitments from local governments and the MVRPC to more than $52.1 million, according to the planning commission.

“All of the projects are located throughout MVRPC’s Metropolitan Planning Organization area, which includes Greene, Miami, Montgomery, and northern Warren Counties,” the Miami Valley Regional Planning

SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS:

• Centerville Station Road (CENTERVILLE): Widening the road from two to three lanes between Parkeast Court and the eastern city limits of Centerville. Other work will include reallignment of road and a retaining wall to stabilize road on the hillside. TOTAL COST: $5.15 million FEDERAL FUNDING: $2.18 million
• Chambersburg Road (HUBER HEIGHTS): Widening the road from Old Troy Pike to the western city limits from two to three lanes. An 8-foot bike/walking path would be built on the north side of the road. TOTAL COST: $3.5 million FEDERAL FUNDING: $1.93 million
• Smithville Road (DAYTON): Reconstruction of the road between U.S. 35 and Huffman Avenue to include new pavement, curbs, sidewalks, street lights and catch basins. TOTAL COST: $3.16 million FEDERAL FUNDING: $2.1 million
• Salem Avenue (DAYTON): Rebuilding of Salem Avenue between Emerson and Elsmere avenues. Project will include new pavement, curbs, sidewalks and street lights. TOTAL COST: $2.97 million FEDERAL FUNDING: $1.84 million
• Indian Ripple Road (BEAVERCREEK): Widening of the road to three lanes with an 8-foot path on the south side of the road between Baronwood and and Woodview East. TOTAL COST: $2.47 million FEDERAL FUNDING: $1.19 million

In September, the planning commission asked members to apply for funding for new transportation projects that would be eligible for the federal money. During the application process, 57 applications were submitted. The 51 projects that were approved for funding are expected to be implemented between 2023-2027.
