Montgomery County power outage tied to fire?

UPDATE @ 10:28 p.m.: The fire in the DP&L substation's distribution area is "potentially" connected to the massive power outage that at its height affected more than 2,600 DP&L customers, said Battalion Chief Steve Meadows, Miami Valley Fire District.

Meadows said his crew found a utility pole on fire. It was not in the high-voltage area, he said. The Miami Valley Fire District crew stood by as a DP&L crew disconnected the power from the pole. The fire is burning itself out, he said.

Meadows said the outage “potentially” is connected to the fire. The DP&L crew was working to re-establish a connection to restore power to customers.

The cause of the fire is not known, the battalion chief said.

By about 10:22 p.m., the DP&L outage page was showing no outages.

UPDATE @ 10:04 p.m.: The Montgomery County power outage is believed to have been traced to a fire at a DP&L substation in the 900 block of Soldiers Home Miamisburg Road in Miamisburg.

A worker with the utility tells us the fire has been contained.

Our cameraman reports there are wires on the ground that are burning and there is smoke coming from transformers on the property.

A Miami Valley Fire District crew was dispatched just after 9 p.m. on a report of a structure fire. That crew is no longer on scene.

At 10 p.m., the DP&L online outage map shows 1,769 customers without power.

FIRST REPORT

A power outage in Montgomery County tonight is affecting an estimated 2,610 Dayton Power & Light customers.

WHIO.com received a phone call about 8:50 p.m. from Cottage Avenue, in West Carrollton, reporting that several homes on that street had no power.

The outage could be as widespread as to reach Gettysburg Avenue in Dayton, where Dayton police said some residents there were reporting they had no power.

Police also said DP&L has dispatched a crew to that area.

We’re trying to reach DP&L officials for more details. We will update this developing report as we get information.
