Miami Valley sees record-breaking low temperatures today

The calendar may say May 1st, but Mother Nature is saying “not so fast my friend!”

Today will likely go down as a record setting day across the Miami Valley with temperatures dropping to record lows today.

Prior to today, the coldest May 1 on record came in 1994 when the temperature only reached 50 degrees in Dayton. This afternoon, temperatures will struggle to get past the mid 40s, Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Austin Chaney said.

The current Storm Center 7 Forecast only calls for a high of 45 degrees in Dayton.

Not only will today likely be a record setting day, but it will be one of the coldest May days in recent memory. According to the National Weather Service, the last time that the temperature in Dayton failed to get above 45 degrees in May was May 10th, 1960.

Responsible for all of this is a stacked, cold-core, area of low pressure currently spinning across the Great Lakes. With this setup, the air a few thousand feet off the ground is very cold.

A half mile off the ground, temperatures are 28 degrees or colder. At 8,000 feet, the temperature drops to 14 degrees. Temperatures that are so cold and so close to the ground, combined with clouds, rain, and a stuff northwesterly breeze results in surface temperatures struggling to warm.

It won’t last forever through.

By Wednesday, this cold pattern is losing its grip on the Miami Valley. Temperatures will return to the mid 50s Wednesday, upper 60s Friday, and low 70s this weekend.
