Miami Valley Hospital offering incision-free brain surgery

DAYTON — Miami Valley Hospital will now offer an incision-free brain surgery that benefits patients with essential tremor or dominant Parkinson’s disease.

Miami Valley Hospital is 1 of 8 centers in the U.S. offering Tremor Program Services.

The treatment has the ability to reduce tremors of the hands in some patients, Premier Health officials said in a release.

The surgery is commonly known as MR-guided focused ultrasound and has the ability to reduce tremors of the hands in some patients, Premier Health officials said in a release.

Essential tremor is a progressive neurological disorder. It is characterized by an involuntary and rhythmic shaking of the head, voice, legs, arms, and hands, where it occurs most commonly

“Tremor can have a significant impact upon a person’s quality of life,” Dr. Daniel Gaudin, a neurosurgeon with Premier Health’s Clinical Neuroscience Institute, said.

The treatment is a single procedure uses focused sound waves guided by MRI to treat tremor, deep in the brain, without incisions or permanent implants.
