Report: Man steals SUV after asking to start it, promising he won’t take it

DAYTON — A man stole a Dayton woman’s SUV after he asked to start it and told her he wasn’t going to take it, according to a police report.

The woman was picking her children up from a babysitter in the 1100 block of Troy Street around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when a man approached her and asked if she was thinking about selling her Chevrolet Trailblazer.

She said she and her husband were thinking of selling it after the new year, according to the report.

The man then asked if he could start the SUV and told her that he was not going to take it.

When she let him start the vehicle, he drove off.

When police arrived, she told them that the SUV was out of gas and that he wouldn’t get far, according to the report.

The vehicle was found a few hours later in a parking lot. Approximately $97 in cash was stolen from the SUV, according to the report.

Scott R. Buchholz, 45, was arrested at a Scranton Street home around 8 p.m. on suspicion of theft.

He has not been formally charged.
