DAYTON — A Dayton man was injured while driving his truck in Texas during this month’s severe winter weather.
Alan Perkins has been a truck driver for 45 years.
He was in Kyle, Texas two weeks ago, delivering groceries, when Texas was hit with unprecedented winter weather.
Alan ended up crashing his semi into the back of another semi-truck.
“They had to cut him out of it, totaled the truck, and almost totaled him,” said his wife Aletha Perkins. “He has broken bones from the waist down – the hip, pelvis, two legs, ankles.”
Alan has now undergone multiple surgeries at a hospital outside of Austin.
Aletha says he has no way to get to her husband.
“I could scratch up the money to get there, but there’s no place to stay – I can’t afford that,” explained Aletha.
She says while Alan does have health insurance, it only covers the basics and would not pay for him to come home.
Aletha says the hardest part has been not being by her husband’s side through all of this.
“If he were to die, I would lay down right beside him and die,” said Aletha. “I would just stop breathing.”
Once Alan does get back to Dayton, Aletha says he will have to undergo several weeks of physical therapy.
