KETTERING — A Miami Valley woman and hundreds of others across the country all played Taps this Memorial Day to honor America’s fallen veterans.
Kettering’s Janice Duke used her clarinet to play Taps on her porch on Winding Way as part of “Taps Across America.”
Taps Across America is an annual event that asks Americans, wherever they are at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day to pause for a one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States.
The event started last year as a way to commemorate Memorial Day during the COVID pandemic with people playing Taps in their neighborhood, according to the Taps Across America website.
The time 3 p.m. was chosen because it is the time when most Americans are enjoying time off from work for the national holiday, the website said.
Duke says she was playing in remembrance of her dad.
Just like Duke, anyone who could sound Taps on a bugle, trumpet, or similar instrument were welcomed to participate in the event whether it was from their porch or balcony.
