More than 1,000 doses of the new Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine have arrived in the Miami Valley.
The first Johnson & Johnson doses were given at the Clark County Combined Health District’s clinic at the Upper Valley Mall around noon. That agency received 300 doses of the new vaccine yesterday.
Preble and Miami County health departments each received 300 doses of the vaccine, which is the first single-shot vaccine to combat the virus in the U.S.
Preble County’s registration for its 300 doses of the vaccine was full by noon Wednesday.

Miami County is working to finalize its plans for a separate clinic for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that should have registration open later this week, according to officials. Details on registration could be released as early as today.
Darke County will be holding a special clinic on Saturday to use the 600 doses the county health department and Wayne Healthcare received yesterday. Signups will be done using their regular registration process.
Greene County Public Health also has received 300 doses, however plans to use the vaccine to reach specific portions of the county’s population.
“We will be scheduling for those doses by appointment only with the hopes of reaching those with access issues,” said Laurie Fox, spokeswoman for Greene County Public Health. “Our Health Commissioner, along with members of our Vaccination Planning Team, have proposed conducting on site clinics or going into homes in collaboration with EMS/Fire Departments in our communities and getting assistance from them to identify known areas of where vaccine eligible individuals are located. "
Greene County does not plan to use the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at its general public vaccine clinics at this time, Fox said.
Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County said it has not yet received its first batch of Johnson & Johnson vaccine, but when it does it plans to use target the vaccine similarly to Greene County.
“We are still working on plans pending the amount and when we get it. But generally it would be for special use cases such as the homebound and congregate settings,” said spokesman Dan Suffoletto.
Logan County Health District said it also received 300 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and plans to administer those on March 11.
