Invasive trees banned in Ohio starting next year

MIAMI VALLEY — The white-flowered trees you may have seen in the Miami Valley are known as Callery pear trees.

They are probably one of the only trees you see in full bloom right now. The trees blooming are causing an issue for the plants in our area.

The shadows they cast don’t let for our native plants to get sunlight making it difficult for them to grow.

Not only are they causing damage to the environment, but they also can cause property damage due to their branches breaking often.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is set to ban the trees in 2023.

But removing the trees can be hard since not only can they spread from their seeds, but from their roots as well.

We spoke with Biologist Lisa Zoromski at Five Rivers Metroparks, and she explained how to safely cut them down.

“They also have a mechanism so whenever branches damage or the tree is cut, and if it’s not treated with herbicides, it actually produces a chemical in its root system in the soil to prevent more species from growing in that area besides the Callery pear,” Zoromski said.
