‘If the first car didn’t get her the second one would have;’ Bus driver credited with saving student

CLARK COUNTY — A local school bus driver is credited with saving a student Friday afternoon.

Her last student of the day was getting ready to step off the bus on Hustead Road when three cars flew past the bus doors going around 50 mph.

News Center 7′s Taylor Robertson talked to Karen Amos, who has been a bus driver for Greenon Local Schools for 28 years.

“I stopped, turned on my yellows, and this car behind me swerved around the bus, and then the second one swerved around my bus and then the third one swerved around my bus,” Amos said. “If I would have opened my door she would have stepped out, and if the first car didn’t get her the second one would have.”

News Center 7 requested the video showing the moments right when this happened, but our request was denied.

Amos said the three cars passed her on the right shoulder of the road. Once the cars had passed, she let the student off.

That’s when Amon noticed that a man had witnessed the whole thing happen.

“I threw my arms up and I pulled over beside him and I said ‘Would you please call my boss and let him know what happened?” Amos said.

Ryan Looft was in the area for work when he saw the cars fly by.

He first made a call to the Greenon City Schools transportation superintendent to let them know what he saw.

He then posted on Facebook saying he wanted to give credit to Amos.

“This lady probably thinks she’s just doing her job, which is taking kids to and from school and keeping them safe, but she actually did something that kept a child safe,” Looft said. “Every bus driver treats their children like that but I saw firsthand that she clearly made sure it was safe to let the children off the bus.”

Even three days after it happened, Amos said she still can’t think about it without getting upset.

“I still go to bed at night and think ‘what if,’ and I’m thankful that the girl paid attention to me, and I’m thankful that I’ve been trained by my boss and my trainer so well,” Amos said.
