How to handle driving on icy, snow-covered roads

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

After yesterday’s showers and freezing temperatures this morning, icy roads may be part of your morning commute.

News Center 7′s Dontre Drexelius spoke with Sharon Fife, the D&D Driving School’s President, about what drivers should do if they find themselves in a dangerous situation.

“Ice is tricky. So, one, you want to be looking, searching the road for any changes in the road condition,” Fife said.

Fife explained, “If you do go over ice, you don’t want to do anything. You just try to go over the ice and don’t push the gas, don’t push the brake, don’t steer, just try to go straight if you can at all possible.”

Anytime you’re driving in wintery conditions, make sure to leave more space between you and other drivers.

“If you break, you always want to break when you’re going straight. So, if you have to make a turn, you want to break early, just in case, it’s like you have plenty of time to adapt,” Fife continued by saying, “If you start to slide, you ease off the brake. Or if your wheels start to spin, you ease off the gas so that you can regain grip on the road.”

AAA recommends keeping sand or cat litter, a shovel, and traction mats just in case you get stuck.
