Driver killed in overnight wrong-way crash on I-71 in Clinton County

CLINTON COUNTY — A stretch of I-71 was shut down in both directions after a deadly wrong-way crash in Clinton County early Monday morning.

The crash was reported around 12:45 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-71 a few miles south of the state Route 73 exit.

A Ford Escape SUV was traveling south in the northbound lanes when the driver crashed head-on into a semitrailer, our news partners at WCPO-TV report. The driver of SUV was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clinton County Coroner’s Office.

The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of family.

The driver of the semi, who was also not identified, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries, the station reports.

Impairment, either by alcohol or drugs, is suspected as a factor in the crash, investigators told the station.

Both directions of I-71 were shut down for the crash investigation but the highway has since reopened.
