UPDATE @ 8:15 p.m. (Sept. 19): The two victims were found in a car parked in a driveway in the 2300 block of Rugby Drive in what police believe was a drug-related, targeted shooting, Dayton Lt. Andrew Gillig said.

One of them had been shot in the chest and other suffered a grazing wound. Both are related to each other and police believe they were targeted, he said. The car and house were hit by several rounds of gunfire.

Gillig said whether the shooting could be characterized as a drive-by remains under investigation.

Police are operating on a theory that the shooting may be drug related because a quantity of suspected heroin was found in the car in which the victims were found, he said.

Gillig said anyone who saw anything is asked to call Dayton police at 333-COPS. Callers may remain anonymous.

FIRST REPORT

Dayton police are investigating a shooting in the 2300 block of Rugby Road that has left two men wounded, one said to be critical.

We’re hearing that one of the victims, believed to be in his 30s, was being operated on at Miami Valley Hospital. The other, believed to be in his 20s, suffered a minor wound.

Police and medic units were dispatched about 7 p.m. on a report that a man had been wounded.

Officers arrived on scene to discover that two men had been wounded and that they had been taken to the hospital by private conveyance. Investigators are operating on information they’ve been told, that the gunfire came from a passing automobile.

Police are in the neighborhood, looking for evidence that could lead them to a suspect or suspects.
