The Dayton Foundation has $1 million in scholarships, but time is running out to apply

DAYTON — The Miami Valley’s largest community foundation is urging students to get their scholarships paperwork in before the March 5th deadline.

“We don’t want that money to sit there. We want it to get spent, go out and help kids get to school,” Michelle Brown, the director of scholarship services for The Dayton Foundation said.

She explained, her organization has about $1 million in different scholarships. However, the number of students who have applied this year is down about 50 percent.

She thinks high school seniors may be sick of being on a computer all day for school, so they are not applying.

“The thought of having to do one more thing on the computer is just too much to bear,” Brown said.

She is encouraging students to fill out the forms even if they have not finalized post-graduation plans.

“Even if they’re not 100 percent sure what they’re going to do in the fall, but they think that they’re going to go to college, somewhere, somehow, to go in and apply,” Brown said.

The Dayton Foundation is offering a variety of scholarships, including options for athletes, musicians, and certain majors.

“Just because they’re not the top of the class and the 4.0 GPA doesn’t mean there’s not something out there for them because there certainly is,” Brown said.
