UPDATE @ 7:18 p.m.: Four people have been displaced by the fire on Jewelstone Drive in Dayton that's being blamed on unattended cooking, District Chief James Rose said.
"The apartment is a total loss," he said. "Their apartment has been totally destroyed and they won't be able to return to it for some time."
Rose said one of the occupants of the second-floor unit told firefighters sauce was cooking on the stove. Other combustibles on the stove caught fire, Rose said, and the flames spread upward into the overhead cabinetry.
The district chief said this is the third food-related fire he has been dispatched to in recent days. People have no idea how quickly a food fire can spread, he said, “and before you know, it’s beyond what you can manage.”
The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents, the district chief said.
"Our concern now is going to be water damage," Rose said. Crews are working to minimize water damage to the first floor. "It's possible other residents could be displaced, depending on the extent of the damage."
No one was injured in the fire.
Rose estimated the damage at $10,000 to $12,000 for starters. That high number could change, depending on the water damage, he said.
