Crews called to kayakers in distress in Spring Valley

Spring Valley — Kayakers were rescued from the water in Spring Valley Saturday afternoon.

Crews were called to the area of Constitution Park around 5 p.m. of reports of two kayakers saying they were injured on the water.

Crews from multiple departments were called to the water rescue but realized over an hour into the investigation the two had already been rescued by bystanders, according to Fire Chief Rusty Cross with Spring Valley Fire Department.

He said that the water level is high today making the water move faster than normal.

Cross said when water is high like this, it’s important to keep track of where you are in the water in case you need to call for help.

All the bridges in the area have road names on them, making it easier for crews to find you, Cross said.

Dispatchers lost contact with the two kayakers which made it difficult to locate them and know where resources should go, according to Cross.

“If you’re injured and hurt we are more than happy to come out, but make the phone call back to say ‘hey we are out of the water’ so we are not deploying more resources,” Cross said.

Emergency crews did not take anyone to the hospital.

We will update this story as we learn more.
