Crews called to hotel fire near Dayton Mall

UPDATE @ 7:53 p.m.:

A woman left cooking unattended tonight when she was accidentally locked out of her second-floor hotel suite.

Firefighters were called just after 6 p.m. on a report of a structure fire at Hawthorn Suites By Wyndam, 155 Prestige Place Drive.

"She couldn't get back to the cooking quick enough," said Battalion Chief Steve Meadows of the Miami Valley Fire District. "By the time she got back entry into her own unit there was a fire there."

Crews were able to quickly put out the blaze. The fire did not extend to the attic, Meadows said, "which pretty much kept 90 percent of the damage to the primary apartment."

Damages were estimated at $75,000, and the woman renting the suite is the only person displaced, Meadows said.
