Cows escape, cause chaos in West Milton

Five cows escape, causing some near-misses this evening on Route 571.

"I was looking out my front window all of a sudden I see what appear to be elk, but all of a sudden it was five cows loose," said Ron Douglas, who lives next to an elk farm.

The cows on the loose from the elk farm started "causing chaos," Douglas said, when they went out into the roadway. He said motorists had to hit the brakes hard, and were blowing their horns when the bovine were impeding traffic.

There were some close calls, Douglas said.

No motorists crashed into the animals, according to a Miami County dispatcher.

The animals then went off the side of the roadway and into a soybean field, Douglas said, where the owner was trying to round them back up.
