BEAVERCREEK — About 3,000 soccer players will not be coming to Beavercreek next month for the “Creek Classic” after organizers cancelled it today.

The Beavercreek Soccer Association told News Center 7′s James Brown he is saddened to deliver this news, but organizers did not not have any other choice.

“Creek Classic” Co Director, Ben Guthrie, said Thursday afternoon he had to notify almost 300 teams from our area and out of state about the cancellation.

“We kept waiting for Governor Dewine’s full rollout plan,.. but there are too many unknowns," Gutherie said.

The tournament had its 30 fields ready for play, but Guthrie said it warned vendors to hold off, and that helped the organization financially.

The John Ankeney Soccer Complex is just south of U.S. 35 and stretches along Yellow Brick Road.

Guthrie said,"we were concerned about social distancing and whether families would feel comfortable being so close together on our fields."

With this tournament, the association’s largest fundraiser for the year, Guthrie said losses in revenue are in the six figure range. From the economic impact standpoint, Guthrie said that is more like a million dollars.

The Beavercreek Soccer Association is a private, non-profit organization and does not get any financial help from the state or federal government.
