Semi hauling 46,000 pounds of nails overturns on I-75

BUTLER TWP. — UPDATE @ 6:30 p.m.:

The ramp from eastbound Interstate 70 to northbound Interstate 75 will remain closed until after 7:30 p.m., when crews will right an overturned semi.

The semi tractor-trailer hauling 46,000 pounds of nails rolled onto its side around 4 p.m. on North I-75 at I-70.

The left two lanes of I-75 are open but the far right lane remains blocked.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Chris Colbert said the truck was headed east on I-70 when it went onto the ramp of NB I-75.

“At the bottom of the ramp it appears that it lost control or the load shifted for some reason, causing the vehicle to roll onto its side,” he said.

A pickup was unable to stop and struck the rear of the truck.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital, Colbert said.

Crews were working to unload the boxes of nails from the truck before it would right it, sometime around 7:30 p.m. after rush hour, the patrol said.

UPDATE @ 5 p.m.:

The far left lane northbound Interstate 75 is now open and the semi hauling 46,000 pounds of nails that overturned has been pushed to the right side of the highway.

A street sweeper had to clear the lanes of nails before it could reopen to traffic.

Two people were taken to local hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, the semi driver and an occupant in a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck that were involved in the crash, according to the Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

UPDATE @ 4:10 p.m.:

The semi that overturned was hauling 46,000 pounds of nails, and there are now nails covering the highway, according to OSP reports.
