City of Springfield to receive $6 million grant from Department of Defense

SPRINGFIELD — The City of Springfield is receiving a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to construct a new building at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport.

The $6 million grant, awarded through the Defense Community Infrastructure Program, will help build a facility to house the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence at the airport.

“This project provides a new research facility for government, academia and industry to continue advancing our national security efforts,” Ohio Congressman Mike Turner said in a release.

Turner said the building will help Springfield-Beckley join Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in “groundbreaking innovation and research” that will strengthen the nation’s “war-fighting capabilities in air, space and cyberspace forces.”

“The region is well on its way to becoming the hub of defense-related as well as commercial advances in flying cars,” Jeff Hoagland, President & CEO of Dayton Development Coalition, said in the release.
