CDC issues warning over increase in measles cases around the world

MIAMI VALLEY — The CDC has issued a warning concerning an increase in measles cases around the world.

They are urging doctors to vaccinate babies earlier than normal if families plan to leave the county.

There have already been four cases in our area, two in Miami County and two in Montgomery County.

The CDC says if a child is six months old and will be leaving the country they should get the MMR vaccine early instead of waiting until 12 months to get the first shot and then the second shot between four and six years old.

Dr. Becky Thomas, Medical Director, Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County, said if the child gets the shot earlier than 12 months, it would require they get an extra dose within their lifetime in order to have long-lasting protection.

Thomas said everyone is at risk of getting measles if they have not been vaccinated, and the disease can develop into more serious complications such as pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death.

The first signs of the disease will look a lot like other viral infections.

“So you might have some pinkeye, some coughing, a bit of a stuffy or runny nose, and a very high fever even as high as 104 degrees. Then a few days later, a rash will start and it usually starts on the face, usually up towards the hairline, and then moves down towards the rest of the body,” Thomas said. “It’s very important that everyone gets vaccinated.”

If you think you may be showing signs of measles, Thomas said to call your doctor’s office and let them know you want to be tested so they can prepare to examine you without putting other people at risk.
