Cause sought for barn fire in Mechanicsburg

A barn fire Monday afternoon remains under investigation as firefighters worked into the evening, digging through what's left of the structure to determine the cause.

Crews from Mechanicsburg, Pleasant, Catawba, Madison County and Urbana were dispatched to the scene in the 9000 block of Davidson Road just before 4 p.m.

Mechanicsburg Fire Chief Andy Anderson said the barn had electric service, but that is not believed to have caused the fire.

"It's a pretty good sized barn," Anderson said. "There was heavy damage ... a total loss."

He said the fire was contained at about 5:15 p.m. Nobody was injured, he said.

The owner, who declined to give his name, said no animals were inside the barn, but it did house at least one tractor, other equipment and property.

Anderson said the dollars-and-cents damage estimate for the structure and contents is undetermined.
