“Ban assault weapons now;” Dayton Mayor reacts to State of the Union address

DAYTON — Tuesday night the State of the Union took place with President Biden’s plans for the year.

Dayton Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims, Jr. shared his thoughts about the address on Twitter during the event.

At 9:40 p.m., Mims shared this plane from the Biden administration:

Mims recounted his teaching history in public schools by saying, “I understand firsthand the great responsibility of educating our youth.”

Following Bidens comments about assault weapons, Mims echoed the president’s idea by pushing for a ban saying, “Ban assault weapons now - for the victims of the Oregon District mass shooting and every life lost to senseless violence.”

Mims referenced former Mayor Nan Whaley by saying, “Dayton led the way on community police reform under former Mayor [Nan Whaley], but it’s clear we still need national police reform.”

After the State of the Union address, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders shared the Republican response to Biden’s remarks.

Sanders addressed the Republican culture war issues and reportedly accused Biden of going after “woke fantasies,” according to The Associated Press.

On Wednesday, February 8, Mims and retired journalist Marsha Bonhart will have an interview in front of an audience to discuss the City of Dayton’s accomplishments and plans moving forward.

This State of the City address will be held at the Dayton Metro Library.
