Tennessee Highway Patrol and Robertson County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were dispatched to westbound Interstate 24 near mile marker 23 at around 2 a.m. on reports of a crash, a spokesperson for Robertson County EMS stated in a statement, according to CBS News.

When state troopers arrived, they found the car rolled over onto its top with “very extensive damage,” the spokesperson continued. All occupants from one vehicle were found outside after apparently being ejected during the crash.

Of the ejected occupants six were young girls, ranging from 1-year-old to 18-years-old, according to the spokesperson. Medics pronounced these girls to be dead at the scene.

Another adult woman was ejected from the car; however, she was found alive, yet in critical condition. Medics treated her at the scene before air-lifting her to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for further care, the spokesperson informed.

“A total of 4 Advanced Life Support ambulances responded to this scene and one helicopter/air ambulance,” the spokesperson said. “Initial arriving units worked quickly to search for, assess and triage the total 9 patients involved.”

The other two individuals walked away from the crash with minor to no injuries. An adult male reported minor injuries when medics arrived and another suffered no injuries at all. Medics transported the adult male to a local hospital.

Officials did not identify any of the victims or the relation between them.

Tennessee Highway Patrol led the investigation into the crash. The cause of the crash remained under investigation

“Our office recognizes the incredible difficulty of this scene,” the spokesperson said. “Please keep the families and persons involved in your thoughts and prayers.”
