Kroger to offer smartphone-enabled rapid COVID test

CINCINNATI — Kroger Health announced plans to offer Gauss Surgical’s smartphone-enabled, at-home COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test Kits nationwide.

The test, which is currently awaiting Food and Drug Administration Emergency Use Authorization, will include video instructions to walk users through the proper way to collect the nasal swab and complete the test through the app. Users will wait 15 minutes before being prompted to scan their rapid tests.

This will be the first rapid COVID-19 test that can be fully performed using only a smartphone and a lateral flow assay. The test will not involve a laboratory, a telemedicine visit or any specialized electronics.

Kroger said that it expects to sell the test online and over the counter at its 2,200 pharmacies nationwide.
