DAYTON — A man remains hospitalized after he was shot by a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputy at the Possum Creek MetroPark in Dayton Sunday night.

The man, who was not identified, is still receiving treatment Monday morning at an undisclosed area hospital after suffering a single gunshot wound in the incident, the sheriff’s office said in a media release Monday morning.

Deputies and Five Rivers MetroParks Rangers were called to the park at 4790 Frytown Road around 8:30 p.m. Sunday on reports of a suspicious person. 911 callers reported the man was possible under the influence of drugs and had run away from them without shoes on, a sheriff’s office spokesperson said in the media release.

A deputy who was in the area on an unrelated call responded to the MetroPark, arrived before rangers, and located the suspicious person, investigators said. The deputy, who was also not identified, first requested a medic because the man was found drinking gasoline.

However before additional crews arrived, the deputy reported he had shot the man.

The deputy was hospitalized, but has been treated and released after suffering a medical condition that resulted from the incident. The deputy has also been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

This is a developing story and we’ll continue to update this page as new details become available.
