Defense files notice of appeal following conviction of ex-Springboro teacher on sex crimes

LEBANON — Defense attorneys for John Austin Hopkins filed a notice of appeal in Warren County court Thursday, following the conviction and sentencing of the former Springboro teacher on sex crimes involving children.

David A. Chicarelli filed a notice of appeal in Warren County Court Thursday. However, Chicarelli said due to cost, a court appointed attorney will be handling the appeal.

In March, a jury convicted Hopkins of 34 counts of gross sexual imposition. He sexually abused first grade girls while working as a gym teacher at Clearcreek Elementary School in Springboro during the 2018-19 school year. Surveillance video caught the crimes.

On June 3rd, Judge Robert Peeler sentenced Hopkins to eight years in prison.

Chicarelli said Hopkins will appeal the length of his sentence.

Additional details about the motion filed today were not available.

Hopkins, was working as a physical education teacher at Clearcreek Elementary and Springboro Intermediate schools at the time of the incidents.
