A juvenile charged in a May 4 fight in which she struck another girl in the head with a shovel admitted to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct Friday in Miami County Juvenile Court.
Emily Olinger, 14, of Tipp City was charged along with Miranda Fugate, 14, now of Montgomery County, with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
The charges were filed by the sheriff's office following the fight, which became public through a viral video showing a Fugate being struck with a shovel.
The fight, which occurred at Olinger's home in Bethel Twp., resulted from a dispute over a boy, deputies said.
Olinger denied the allegations during a court appearance this summer. She answered questions Friday from Judge W. McGregor Dixon Jr. after admitting to the offense.
Olinger said she and Fugate were fighting physically when Fugate said she was "going to go get something." In response, she grabbed a shovel that was nearby, Olinger said.
"I tossed it and it ended up hitting her," she said.
"You threw a shovel ... a heavy item," Dixon said, asking Olinger if she knew how lucky she was that Fugate was not injured when hit.
Defense lawyer Andrew Wannemacher said Olinger is a high school freshman and likely would benefit from counseling.
Dixon sentenced her to counseling and 12 hours of community service. She was ordered to have no contact with Fugate, to avoid further threats or violence, to follow the rules at home and to attend school daily. The judge did not order a fine or costs.
Fugate admitted the charge in August. Her case was transferred to Montgomery County Juvenile Court for disposition.
