VIDEO: Cruiser hit during pursuit in Miami, Shelby counties; 2 in custody

PIQUA — Two Michigan men were arrested Thursday night after a pursuit involving multiple agencies on Interstate 75 in Miami and Shelby counties ended in a crash.

Dustin Chappel, 47, and Mark Lacy, 39, both were booked into the Shelby County Jail.

Officers were first alerted around 11 p.m. to reported reckless driving on I-75 north in Miami County. The vehicle was spotted north of Piqua and troopers attempted to stop the driver. However, troopers said the driver took off, leading to the pursuit.

Sidney police used tire deflation devices to puncture the fleeing car’s tires.

“The suspect continued to flee and as the suspect vehicle slowed down, troopers as well as officers from Sidney Police Department and deputies from Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, attempted to block the suspect vehicle in with their patrol vehicles,” a statement from the Ohio State Highway Patrol read.

Troopers said the driver, identified as Chappel, struck a trooper’s cruiser twice before attempting to drive through the median.

The patrol intentionally struck the vehicle to disable it and allow for the arrests to be made.

OSHP said a large bag of Oxycontin was recovered from the vehicle during a search.

Troopers also said Chappel was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Both men remain in the Shelby County Jail on $100,000 bonds, jail records showed.
