A man accused of impersonating a deputy United States marshal had guns, handcuffs, badges, emergency lights and other restricted police items before he was arrested last night.
Michael L. Walters, of Degraff, was taken into custody and charged with one count of impersonating a police officer by the Jackson Center Police Department.
Police have no evidence that Walters attempted any traffic stops or arrests, but Jackson Center Chief Joseph E. Cotterman is asking anyone who might have been stopped by Walters to contact his department.
"I'd like to know how far he took this," Cotterman said.
Cotterman said his department and the U.S. Marshals Service began their investigation several weeks ago when Walters allegedly made suspicious comments to an off-duty officer about drug raids he had made. Walters also reportedly told officers he had been to a police academy but was removed because of a prior felony conviction.
Walters was booked into Shelby County Jail, but was released on a $567 bond, according to jail records.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Jackson Center Police Department at (937) 596-6140.
